Pick Path self-guided historic tour - TUKU26 Whakatū

Developed in time for TUKU26 Whakatū (Nelson’s annual heritage festival), during the April school holidays the public is invited into our Holiday Park to take part in a self-guided historic tour of the Holiday Park and close surrounds.

Step into the past with our 100 Years of Beachside Memories tour. Using your mobile phone, follow the narration, images, and directions as you explore 10 historic spots around the Park. Start your journey here: www.pickpath.com/play/301
(If you already have the PickPath app on your phone, the tour will open automatically in the app.)

From pre-European and non-existent beach days, through the war years when the Defence Forces took over part of the Holiday Park, the post-war boom years of camping in NZ, the annual carnivals and entertainment, decades of beach motor racing, and tens of thousands of happy holiday makers (with just one hint of a riot), to what we have today – New Zealand’s largest Holiday Park poised for another 100 years of good vibes and beachside memories.

The tour takes around 60 minutes and is narrated by the fabulous NZ actor, Mark Hadlow.  It also features a joyful song celebrating holidays at the beach by NZ singer-songwriter, Linn Lorkin.  Linn generously shared her talent with us, and if you’d like to hear the full song, you can find it at linnlorkin.bandcamp.com,where you can listen and, if it strikes a chord, download it for a small fee.  (Warning:  it’s quite hard to get out of your head once it’s in there!)

We hope you enjoy the tour as much as we enjoyed developing it.

Special thanks to The Nelson Provincial Museum ARC for its superb archive, including the fantastic Nelson Photo News section.
