The Classic Kiwi Holiday
Since 1926
We’re really proud that New Zealanders have been making beachside memories here at Tāhunanui, Nelson, since 1926!
So naturally, in 2026 we’re celebrating – 100 years of beachside memories!
The Tāhuna Sands Association first took over responsibility for development of the already popular recreational location of Tāhunanui in 1926 and soon built changing sheds, a playground and a kiosk.
Many people were already freedom camping in the area but the new facilities increased demand so much that a motor camp was officially added to the mix in November 1937. That year 700 holidaymakers camped on site – the beginning of a summer holiday tradition that has continued to this day for many generations of families.
The holiday park now occupies some 24 hectares running alongside Tāhunanui Beach and inlet. Regularly appearing at the top of Favourite Beaches in New Zealand surveys, the Holiday Park itself was also the recipient of the Hospitality NZ Award for the Outstanding Accommodation Provider, Nelson Tasman in 2025.
A number of centennial events for our guests and the wider Whakatū Nelson community are planned throughout 2026 – join us for the celebrations.
