Brook Waimārama Sanctuary

The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is the South Island’s largest fully fenced sanctuary for vulernable native flora and fauna. Visitors to the sanctuary can immerse in the lush native bush, glorious birdsong and tranquil scenery just minutes away from the Nelson City Centre.

The sanctuary offers an unparalleled opportunity to reconnect with nature. Tui, kerero (wood pigeon), koromiko (bellbird) and piwakawaka (fantail) welcome you as they flutter playfully through the treetops, whilst an array of native plants adorn the surroundings, creating a mesmerising landscape. Glow-worms, slugs, wetas and geckos find shelter in the mossy valley, whilst freshwater koura and koaro thrive in the creeks and waterways.

A network of tracks dissect the hidden valleys of the sanctuary, with self-guided and guided walk options available. The main loop track is suitable for all ages and abilities and is fully accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The track itself takes 45 minutes (return), weaving through ferns, fruiting trees and waterfalls, whilst other walks take you further into the valley or up through the ridgeline.
