Tāhuna Beach Camp Inc
Tāhuna Bach Camp Inc is committed to improving, developing and enhancing the appeal, enjoyment and attractiveness of the Holiday Park and the Tahuna Beach Reserve area for the benefit of the people of Nelson and visitors, and for future generations to enjoy.
In 1926, the then-named Tahuna Sands Association took on the task of managing the Tāunanui Reserve land and began developing the area on behalf of Nelson City Council. The Association made considerable improvements to the beach reserve area, which included establishing the Motor Camp as the popularity of camping holidays by private car had already become hugely popular in 1920s New Zealand.
Nelson City Council regained direct control of Tāhunaui Reserve land in 1961. Tāhuna Sands Association altered its name, becoming Tāhuna Beach Camp Incorporated and formally became the managing society of the Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park (TBHP). Nelson City Council leases the land back to the incorporated society to operate the Holiday Park. The lease was renewed in 2021 for a further 33 years (three lots of 11 year terms).
The Holiday Park covers 54 acres (some 22 hectares) of land adjacent to Tāhunanui Beach, these days featuring approximately 600 campsites, 89 accommodation units, and a broad range of facilities such as mini‑golf, playgrounds, a café, a five-room function centre, pet‑friendly zones, and more.
Nowadays, the purpose of the Society is to ensure that the Holiday Park is a sustainable business, by maximising the Park’s appeal to the benefit of the community.
Each year members of the Society elect the governing board of the Holiday Park.
